ARCTIC PLASTIC PROJECT 2024

  DEDICATED TO A CLEANER ARCTIC

OUR ARCTIC HOME UNDER THREAT

Plastic pollution in the Arctic is a growing concern. Despite being one of the most remote and pristine regions on Earth, the Arctic is not immune to the impacts of human activity, including plastic pollution. Several factors contribute to the presence of plastic waste in the Arctic:

Ocean currents: Plastic waste from various parts of the world can be carried by ocean currents into the Arctic region. Even though the Arctic Ocean is largely covered by ice, currents can transport plastics to the area, where they accumulate.

Shipping: Increased maritime traffic in the Arctic, particularly as the region becomes more accessible due to melting sea ice, contributes to plastic pollution. Shipping activities can result in accidental or deliberate discharge of plastic waste into the ocean.

Local sources: While the Arctic may seem sparsely populated, indigenous communities and scientific research stations in the region generate plastic waste. Improper disposal practices or lack of recycling infrastructure can lead to the accumulation of plastic debris on Arctic coastlines.

Microplastics: Microplastics, tiny plastic particles smaller than 5mm in size, have been found throughout the Arctic environment. These microplastics can come from the breakdown of larger plastic items, as well as from sources such as microbeads in personal care products and synthetic fibers from clothing.

A Problem Getting Worse.

THE PRESENCE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE ARCTIC POSES SEVERAL THREATS TO THE DELICATE ARCTIC ECOSYSTEM. MARINE ANIMALS, INCLUDING SEABIRDS, WHALES, SEALS, AND POLAR BEARS, CAN INGEST OR BECOME ENTANGLED IN PLASTIC DEBRIS, LEADING TO INJURY OR DEATH. ADDITIONALLY, THE LONG-TERM IMPACTS OF PLASTIC POLLUTION ON ARCTIC ECOSYSTEMS, SUCH AS POTENTIAL DISRUPTIONS TO FOOD CHAINS AND HABITATS, ARE STILL BEING STUDIED.

EFFORTS TO ADDRESS PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE ARCTIC INCLUDE INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS TO REDUCE MARINE LITTER AND INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE IN ARCTIC COMMUNITIES. HOWEVER, GIVEN THE REMOTE AND CHALLENGING NATURE OF THE ARCTIC ENVIRONMENT, ADDRESSING PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE REGION REMAINS A COMPLEX AND ONGOING TASK.

HOW APP WORKS.

Arctic Plastic Project Unites Outdoor Enthusiasts for Environmental Action Arctic Plastic Project mobilizes outdoor lovers to clean up plastic pollution in the Arctic, fostering responsibility and awareness. Through expeditions and education, it exemplifies grassroots initiatives' power in environmental conservation, aiming to inspire a global movement for sustainability.

From May 2024 to early october 20234 APP will once again organise a series of 10 day cleanup operations on pre targeted locations above the Arctic Circle.

PROJECT LOGISTICS.

These projects will cater for teams of up to 12 persons, be shore based and dedicated to areas of high volumes of garbage. After collection, all waste is collected by our own vessels and transported to mainland waste disposal centres.

We dedicate each day to balancing an opportunity to enjoy this fantastic environment with us, by boat, by foot or by kayak with dedicated, hard work collecting and removing what we find and leaving the shores cleaner than we found them.

VOLUNTEER: HELP : FUNDING:

The best way right now to help APP grow and become more effective, is to sign up for a project.

No time in 2024 ? We still always need help with spreadingb the word about what we do, educating others about the need for ocean conservation. please, reach out to us and get involved, every little bit helps !

We also urgently need more long term devotees to a cleaner arctic that can help us with everything from fund raising to web design.

Are you as marine mechanic perhaps ? You can help us with our various boats. Are you a writer/photographer ? Why not join and help document what we do and help spread the word. Are you an educator ? join us with a group or we can join you virtually and share in our efforts. Can you help fund raising ? We plan to add more collection vessels and expand our capacity to be more active in a broader region of the Arctic in the future, all requiring resources, fuel & people.
